Here are the notes used in our bible study on PEACE.
Before the study I did a podcast video where I shared the inspirational poem from God, called PEACE. You can watch this here.
Following this I look up bible verses on PEACE to discover more what God has to say.
If you'd like to watch the video version of this study on my YouTube channel here is the link.
PEACE BIBLE STUDY NOTES
1. DICTIONARY DEFINITION PEACE - freedom from disturbance; tranquillity.
Freedom from disturbance, what does a disturbance look like to you? A disturbance to me is something that tries to interrupt something I’m doing. An example would be when I am by myself and in the middle a project or task …. and then there’s a knock on the door or my phone rings….
Another example - a noise that wakes me up from a deep sleep.
Tranquility - what does this mean to you? To me tranquility speaks of a quiet place, a beautiful place in nature such as the bush or the beach, away from the noises of the world, a place to refresh.
2. Isaiah 26:3 ~ You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
When it comes to those things that tend to disturb us, I find this bible verse really helps. It shows that the true way to peace is not so much the environment we are in but rather our mindset at the time. And I know that when I spend time with the Lord before doing anything else in my day then what I would normally find disturbing becomes an opportunity instead. “Staying our mind” on Jesus means to spend time with Him first so that His ways are fresh in our minds as we go about other things…
3. John 16:33 ~ I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
The bible clearly tells us that we will have troubles in this world. We only have to look at social media or turn on the news to be reminded that there is trouble all around us and all over the world. We may ask ourselves at times, where can we go to find a little peace? We might think we need to get away from it all to find peace. But Jesus says in the bible verse that it IS IN HIM that we have peace. This means that no matter what is going on around us we can go to Him and find the peace we are looking for.
4. Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. 2 THESSALONIAN 3:16
We see here that we can have peace AT ALL TIMES through the LORD OF PEACE HIMSELF. This is such a precious gift that the Lord offers to us and so often we go looking for peace everywhere else but in Him. When we feel troubled, anxious, grief sticken, broken hearted, worried, scared, unsettled in life we can go to our Lord and ask for His peace and He will give it to us.
5. Matthew 5:9 ~ Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
& Romans 12:18 ~ If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
These bible verses show us how important it is to try and live in peace and to actually choose peace when confronted with challenging issues. I think this is a great point to remember, especially when it comes to topics that involve differences of opinion in bible interpretation – this seems to create so much conflict in the Christian world and is not a good look for the rest of the world.
Social media is another area where we need to choose peace. I see so much argument on social media in general but it grieves my heart to see it also in Christian groups.
When we believe we are so right and someone else is so wrong, we can CHOOSE peace rather than encourage an argument. Remember, it’s important to God that we make every effort to live in peace.
6. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
This bible verse kind of sums up life to me! We when choose peace over anxiety, when we choose prayer over fear, when we choose petition over disappointment, when we choose thanksgiving over complaining, when we choose to ask God when we want something…. God promises us a peace that we cannot ever get anywhere else, through any other means.
In every situation we face every single day we get to choose… what will you choose?
